Every project is different. The process shouldn’t be.
Whether the work involves recording, mixing, mastering or some combination of the three, the goal is to understand what the artist or producer is trying to accomplish and find the most direct way to get there.
That means listening before making decisions, communicating clearly, and respecting the realities of the project — the music, the schedule and the resources available. Experience helps determine where time and money will make a meaningful difference, and where they won’t.
The technology continues to change. The essential part doesn’t: serve the music and the people making it.
MIXING
A mix should sound like the record was always supposed to sound.
Dave approaches mixing as a musician first, listening for the intention behind the music—what should lead, what should support it, where the energy lives and what may be getting in its way.
The goal isn't to impose a signature sound, but to bring the artist's and producer's ideas into focus.
Every project calls for a different level of involvement. Sometimes a rough mix and a conversation say everything Dave needs to know; sometimes the direction develops through collaboration. Either way, experience helps put the time and resources where they make a genuine musical difference.
MASTERING
Mastering is knowing what to change — and what to leave alone.
Mastering brings a different perspective to a finished mix. Dave listens for balance, dynamics, translation and continuity, making the adjustments that help the music travel well from one listening environment to another without changing the character of the record.
Sometimes that means doing very little. The goal is not to make every record louder, brighter or more processed, but to recognize what is already working and make sure the finished project presents it at its best.
